Why Grooming Your Dog Is So Important.

There are three main reasons why we groom dogs.

Firstly brushing a dog removes debris and disturbs the skins surface which releases the natural oil called sebum. This keeps the dog's coat glossy and healthy too. In the wild, the wolf will roll around on the floor in sand to produce the same effect.

As the vast majority of dogs actually quite like having their coats brushed, it is an ideal opportunity to carry out some important health checks on your pet. Checking and cleaning around the eyes is a must for every dog. This will ensure that there is nothing around that could penetrate the eye and cause severe discomfort or even blindness. Your dog’s ears are another area to keep clean to prevent infections. At the same time claws including dew claws can be checked and cut where necessary. If this is not maintained the dew claws can grow into the dog’s skin and cause a lot of pain to the dog. During the summer months many dogs pick up fleas or ticks, particularly when they walk through long grass. These pests are a danger not only to the dog but also to other members of the family. It therefore pays to check carefully. Bad teeth and gums can be a real problem for your dog and the problem here is that they cannot tell you about it. It is therefore very important to use the brushing period as a good time to check your dog's mouth. There are special toothbrushes and toothpaste for dogs which can easily be obtained at your local pet shop.

Thirdly grooming your dog is both a comfort to your pet and a good chance to show that in touching your pet all over, you not only bond with him or her, but show dominance and reassert your position as the Alpha leader of your pack family

As we have said, brushing is both an essential and pleasant episode in any dog's life. Brushing though is only half the story. To ensure that your dog is happy fit and comfortable he or she should be properly washed and groomed on a regular basis. In today's hectic world and there are many constraints on people's time. Also the high cost of fuel and in addition the inconvenience of taking your dog to the grooming parlour make it far better ( and far less stress for your pet ) if the groomer comes to you.

Gadgets used to control dogs are abuse

Gadgets and Equipment used to control dogs are Abuse and Torture and Nothing Less!

If every time some one sprayed some liquid at you when you talked or shocked you with an electric shock when you moved what would you think? Trust me you would not like it.

Electric shock collars and spray collars are abuse to your best friend. Spiked collars dig into and cut the dogs neck. They are absolutely barbaric instruments of torture. Just because some so called Dog Trainer tells you to use them or shop sells them, think of what you’re actually doing to your dog. Ask them why does it help? What does it do to my dog?

Instead of actually stopping the behaviour it makes it worse because the dogs are barking and pulling and jumping because they are trying to look after their pack which is you and this thought is so strong that they will go through a lot of pain to do their job.

Dog Owners should want a loving, trusting relationship with their dogs not a bullying one. Gadgets block learning and causes resentment. There is a better way. Amichien Bonding by Jan Fennell uses no gadgets except slip leads, long line and kind collar. We use the language of the dogs and our aim is for the dogs to do things because they want to not because they are forced.

All dog Owners should be on the dogs side and if your not you should not have them.

Dont Stereotype Dogs

DON’T Stereotype Dogs

Do all French people wear onions around their neck? Do all Australians wear cork screws on their hats? Of Course not.

If I ask you what is the most dangerous dog in America you would probably say Pitbull, Rotweiler, Staff or German Shepherd. But that is completely false. The most dangerous dog in America are Labradors! Why do you ask? Simply because there are more of them.

All dogs come from and think like Wolves. Any dog can bite and will bite if put in the wrong situation. Depending on the dogs personality some are more prone than others such as some have nervous aggression. Which makes them aggressive simply because they are scared which most animals including humans would do in the same situation.

I have washed Staff’s for six years and never been bitten or met one who was not soft and gentle and loving. Of course as I have already said that’s not to say a Staff won’t bite because  they would. But they have real reasons such as defending their den, pack, themselves or over food. But for a wolf this is just nature. Dogs live in our human world and we expect them to act like modern humans but the dogs still act like wild wolves.

Remember any dog can bite but any dog can be as gentle as a butterfly aswell. It all depends on the personality of the dog and the situation us humans put them in.

Dog Socialisation FAIRY LAND.

The Myth of Dog Socialisation.

There are two types of Socialisation environmental and dog interaction.

Environmental is getting dogs used to televisions, cars, washing machines, vacuum cleaners etc. This is very useful for puppies and makes them feel safer in their environment. But depending on the dogs personality if they are nervous they may be scared of the vacuum cleaner. What this comes down to is seeing the vacuum cleaner as a perceived danger and because the dog is the leader of the pack it feels its duty is to bark and growl and protect its pack from what it sees as the danger. What the dog needs is for the owner to become the Alpha and taking away the dogs responsibility and decision making role so when it sees the Owner not worried by the vacuum cleaner nor will the dog be worried. If you do have a dog scared of household machinery become the Alpha using Jan Fennells method of Amichien Bonding® and keep the dog away from the machinery in a separate room while using it.

The other type of socialisation is where dogs meet other dogs and everything is supposed to be wonderful and everyone gets on. This is fairy land and even at puppy age not every dog will get on with each other and supervision is always required. The biggest killer of Wolves in the wild is other Wolves. It is very natural for dogs from different packs not to get on. When you have different packs meeting each other weather at obedience classes or out on a walk there is a big chance they will not get on. For example most dogs are very wary of Boxers. Because Man has made them have bulging eyes, square jaws, sticking out chest and short tails. To other dogs this looks very alien and causes miss communication. Some dogs do get on with each other depending on their personality and breed. Dogs will not only sometimes get on with other dogs they will get on with other animals e.g. cats because they have grown up with them.

Getting dogs used to as many different types of things from an early age is a good idea but don’t be naïve and think every dog will get on with each other. If your dog has you and your family that’s all it needs.

Ben Cornish Jan Fennell Dog Listener

UNDERSTANDING YOUR DOG.

Does your dog pull on the lead? Jump up? Bark Non-stop? Agressive towards otherdogs or people?

If so I can help. I can help any dog behaviour problems due to a method called Amichien Bonding. Which was created by Jan Fennell the Dog Listener who was disillusioned by traditional training methods and was inspired by one of Monty Roberts demonstrations of communicating with Horses. Jan Fennell initially studied her own pack of dogs intently and started to understand how they communicated with each other.
Dogs have the same DNA and bone structure as the wild Wolf and communicate in the same way. They only look different because of man's interbreeding. In the Wolf pack there is an Alpha male and an Alpha female which have total control of all the decision making for their packs daily life. Such as hunting, breeding and marking territory. There is a strict pecking order and everyone knows their job and if a wolf is disloyal to its pack then its time for that wolf to move on.
We communicate with our dogs in a human way such as greeting them when we arrive home from shopping or work.To a dog this is paying homage to the dog and reasserting their leadership. You may say what is wrong with the dog being the Alpha? Well this is where all the problems arise. Because the dog being the leader gives them the decision making and responsibility of the pack which to your dog is you and your family. Because the dog does not understand what a car is or a hoover is, it gets very stressed and reacts in different ways such as non-stop barking, aggression, chewing or licking.
Amichien Bonding allows humans to communicate with our dogs in our human world. I can teach you to become Alpha of the pack, taking away the decision making responsibility of the dog which causes so many problems. http://www.ben-cornish.co.uk/
